Carrier Oils

Many oils are safe to apply directly to the skin (example: 1 drop lavender) just make sure what you are using is not lavandin labeled as lavender or genetically-altered lavender. Quality oils are essential! However, most oils need to be diluted with a carrier oil to be used properly.

Carrier oils help extend and provide a more efficient way to use essential oils.

CARRIER OILS:
*A vegetable oil derived from from the fatty portion of the plant. Usually from the seeds, kernels or nuts.
*Carrier oils are used for diluting essential oils prior to use in order to prevent irritation and protect sensitive skin.
*Dilution of essential oil with a carrier oil does NOT dilute the effects of essential oil. And even prevents waste due to excessive application.

**If you ever get a “warm” sensation be sure to apply carrier oil and never water! This will help dilute the oil vs increasing the intensity. Oil and water do not mix.

Carrier Oil Types:
*YL V-6 oil: odorless, colorless, packed with antioxidants, absorbs quickly
(you can get 10-25% $ back by buying on your ER (essential rewards) order or even get it for FREE by using your ER rewards if you are a YL member – CLICK HERE to join)

*fractionated coconut oil is distilled from pure coconut oil. colorless, odorless, never goes rancid and is easily washed out of fabrics.

*almond oil is high in vitamin E and phytonutrients, nourishing to the skin, it protects cell membranes from oxidative damage.

*grapeseed oil: Commonly found at grocery stores, used for bath bombs, body products.

There are more oils you can dilute with but these are my main favorites.

2. Apps: I have the “REF GUIDE 4 EO” and it’s excellent! Well worth the $6.99. It’s a online version of another pocket reference book that I own. I can quickly look up anything and answer people’s questions.

3. If you get a kit with Young Living, you can join the community with 60K people that I am in and be eligible to receive their paperback resource/guide. Cleaning Your Diffuser

One reason to buy a diffuser from Young Living or a reputable company is because of warranties. Young Living has a 1 year warranty on diffusers! When mine stopped working, they shipped me a totally new one for free!

To clean your diffuser follow directions on box or use this method. Take rubbing alcohol on a qtip and wipe inside on the metal part and around it. Sometimes the oils jam up the metal plate. Those are YL’s instructions to stay within warranty. I’ve also done and seen vinegar and water mix recommended – leaving it to soak for a few hours. Never get water into the air vents.

Essential Oil Supplies

Make sure you are using high quality oils! There are many that are fakes, filled with chemicals, diluted, or even flammable ones! Yes some labels even list that they are flammable! Crazy right? Only use a reputable well known brand. I prefer to use Young Living since they are the only company that grows their own herbs and pesticide free!

Supplies: Oils are better stored in glass, in dark containers, they do not expire if nothing is added to the oils. Rollers may expire when your diluting/carrier oil goes rancid when it is too old.

Essential Oil Safety

  • Keep oils out reach of children. If they manage to open it and drink it call poison control.
  • Keep out of eyes, wash hands well. In case of contact with eye, wash eye with another oil such as olive oil (water and oil do not mix). Water will make it worse.
  • Follow label directions for diffusing, topical, and dietary oils. Over using certain oils may be dangerous. They are used a medicine, you wouldn’t overuse medications, so don’t overuse oils, a little goes a long way.
  • Dilute oils properly. Follow dilution recommendations, especially for use on kids.
  • Certain oils are called hot oils: such as lemon, oregano, thieves, exodus II, thyme, lemongrass, cinnamon bark, peppermint, and clove. They can burn if left on skin undiluted. Wash them off completely off hands with soap and water if you spilled any on your self and surfaces.
  • If any oils feels hot/burning on the body dilute with a carrier oil for relief or wash off.
  • If pregnant, look up the oils you should not use during pregnancy – there are certain ones that cause contractions or other issues. They are very potent if you are using high quality oils! Let your doctor know you are using essential oils.
  • Consult a Reference guide or get the phone app that I use “REF Guide 4EO”.
  • Citrus oils are photosensitive (except for grapefruit). Do not expose area oil was applied to, to sun for at least 12 hours.

A French Macaron Recipe That Works!

So I’ve struggled with making macarons (also known as macaroons). They were always a fail – usually not developing feet. I tried multiple recipes and finally have something to share with you that works! I used room temperature eggs for this that I had left out for 24 hours, I will try again with eggs that are just room temp but what I’ve heard from my friends is that you need really old eggs. Fun fact: eggs at the store are usually about 30 days old already. I’ve been hearing that macarons with home chicken eggs don’t work because they are fresh, but you could give it a try! I have also tried multiple almond flours and the Blue Diamond brand (Sams Club or Amazon) one seems to be the only one that worked out for me.

You will need:

Ingredients:

  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1 cup almond flour
  • 2 C confectioners’ sugar
  • 3 egg whites (room temp)
  • 1/4 tsp cream of tartar
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • pinch of salt
  1. Preheat oven to 275 F
  2. Attach piping bag to tip
  3. Sift confectioners’ sugar and almond flour together through the metal sifter into a bowl. Throw out pieces that are too big.
  4. In a stand mixer, beat egg whites, cream of tartar, and salt until foamy, then slowly add sugar while mixing. When it reaches soft peaks – add coloring and vanilla. Beat until mixture forms stiff peaks.
  5. Gently pour the almond mix over the whipped eggs whites so you do not deflate them.
  6. Gently fold mix into the egg whites with a spatula until the mix can hold a ten count (when you count to 10 it settles in to blend with the rest of mix). The mix should be thick enough to pipe without being runny. (About 45 turns).
  7. Transfer batter to piping bag. Pipe 1 inch circles, at least 1 inch apart.
  8. Tap the pans on a counter top hard to release air bubbles, at least 5 times.
  9. Leave pans on counters for 30 minutes (this helps it grow feet when it goes in the oven later). Macaron will form a skin and wont stick to your finger when ready.
  10. I put the baking mats on top of thin baking cookie sheets. Bake 18-22 min on shelves in the center of the oven. Under baked will cause them to be too moist and collapse. Over baking will make them crack or brown.
  11. Cool the macarons on a cooling rack. If they don’t come off the sheet easily, they are under cooked – try popping them into the oven for longer. (If you really cant get them to come off you can freeze them, then pop them off the sheet and assemble frozen or they will break since they were not baked enough)
  12. When your macarons are cooled, you can fill with any topping you like! I used Natasha’s Kitchen swiss buttercream recipe. Jams, chocolate ganache or plain buttercream are great choices.
  13. To make plain buttercream: beat 3 c powdered sugar, 8 oz unsalted softened butter, 1/4 tsp salt, 2 tsp pure vanilla extract, 1 tablespoon heavy cream. You can add in anything pretty much: cocoa powder, syrups, etc.

What are essential oils?

What are essential oils? Essential oils are the lifeblood of the plant. They are made from the stems, leaves, flowers, bark, or fruit of plants. They contain hundreds of thousands of chemical compounds that make plants what they are. They can repair damage to plants and help with growth. Mankind has used them since the beginning of time as medicine.

I go with a brand that has a great track record and I can trust for being chemical free! Young Living has been my main source for oils since 2015. Always buy directly from them, as I have seen reports of people diluting them and selling them on Amazon. YL is known for being as great company and you can get lots of free products on their rewards program. You can also get rewarded with $50 by referring people if you are a member. To become a member, click here (and I’ll email you a $20 Amazon gift card). You will also get access to facebook support groups!

Coupon apps & rewards

I love couponing! I don’t always use paper coupons anymore. I still print some but I love using apps for cash back. The best thing is when the same product is in a few different apps and paper! It’s easy, just submit your receipt to the apps after shopping! If using paper coupons, check stores policy. You can usually use a manufacturer and store coupon at the same time for one item. Some stores limit you to 4 same coupons per purchase.

Here are my favorite apps and coupons:

1. Ibotta: same money at popular stores. Add what you want beforehand and submit receipt after you checkout. I scan all my items in cart before I checkout. Many times they’ll have offers for money back on any item, any snack bar, any brand fruit, etc. easy to earn fast.

Use my link to earn $10 when you sign up!

2. Checkout 51:

Find the app in App Store. Add your coupon offers and redeem recipes post checkout. Sometimes adding items after hand works for me as well. They also have offers for any brand items. Easy to rack up $$$.

3. Savings Star:

Add your offers and redeem post shopping from popular stores. Redeem money for a deposit into your bank!

4. Savings Catcher by Walmart:

Scan all of your Walmart receipts and if the prices are lower anywhere else you’ll get the money back in the form of a gift card to Walmart. I’ve earned so much on this!

5. Shopkick:

This app allows you to get points just for walking into a store. You can also get points for scanning items in the store, answering questions, and scanning in your receipt and getting points for certain purchases. Redeem your pints for gift cards to many popular stores. Use code SALE424802 or download http://getsk.co/sale424802

6. Cartwheel by Target

One of my favorite apps! Download Target app. Scan items in your cart and save money instantly at checkout. I do this with coupons and 5% off with Target debit card. Lots of savings!

8. SaveAround

You can buy the coupon books on their website and use the app for deals around your hometown and some national coupons for popular stores

9. Baby rewards programs

Free baby registry items

Sign up for a registry at these stores & websites and get freebies. Here’s my loot!

Babies R Us – I was a little disappointed how little they had in there

Target – they have the most loot!

Amazon – make a baby registry, you or someone purchases $10 from it, and complete the categories (or click skip) and they will send you a box of goodies! They vary but I got a huge swaddle cloth.

Motherhood – purchase something at their store. Usually you’ll get this with your first purchase there and they won’t give it again with your next child, but I bought something online from them and received these:

Seventh generation: www.seventhgeneration.com register for their Generation Good and they have samples they’ll send.

Enfamil: I’m not sure how they got my address, as I’m breastfeeding but I’m sure if you register on their website you’ll get the same bundle!

Similac – same story, they somehow got my address. Sign up on their website. Even when breastfeeding, these are nice just in case or to donate.

BuyBuy Baby: I’ve seen people posting their goodies from there but sadly I don’t have one locally. Looks like they give tons of items!

How to get rid of blight & mildew on tomatoes

IMG_1125

Blight is a fungal infection that affects plants in high moisture situations. It is hard to contain and spreads to the rest of the plant. It commonly affects tomatoes. Try not to plant them in the same spot year after year. Baking soda helps create an alkaline environment. Make a spray and cover the whole affected plant. Cover both sides of the leaves.

Mix:

  • 3 tablespoons baking soda, 1 gallon of water, 1 tablespoon vegetable oil, and 2 drops dish soap.
  • Spray every 3 weeks until clears, increase to 3.5 tablespoons if the mildew/blight continues to grow.
